A: Doors open typically at 8PM and closing at 3AM. There will be a special welcome by the hosts followed by a few short introductions of performers.
Q: Who is the resident DJ?
A: DJ SHRAPNEL (Savannah, GA) – After slipping southside from his home town in northern Virginia, Shrapnel has been establishing himself in a variety of formats around Savannah since ’96, most notoriously as resident DJ and publicist at Industrial Resurrection and as a cohort of Chris Cook Theme Parties. Generally mixing up a storm of industrial, EBM, and synthpop, he still gets a kick out of new wave, techno, trip hop, and rock, and somehow managed to get voted Savannah’s Best Club DJ in 2005 by the readers of Connect Savannah. He’s also been lucky enough to spin at Spectral Erosa (Augusta, GA), the Eccentrik Festival (Raleigh, NC), Purgatory (Charlotte, NC), Dracula’s Daughter (Durham, NC), Schadenfreude (DC), Symmetry (Columbia, SC), and Bloodfeast 2 (Jacksonville, FL) . Having not yet mastered the zen of making DJ’ing actually pay the rent, Matt spends his days as a theater technician, scenic carpenter, sound designer, and visual artist.
Q: What about guest DJs?
A: We would love to feature guest DJs from time-to-time. Please contact us for more details.
Q: What about bands?
A: Interested in playing at Black Oaks? Please send us a promo package to the following address: Black Oaks Savannah, PO Box 5225, Savannah Georgia 31414.
Q. Do I need a costume?
A. Wear whatever you want and what makes you comfortable. We love to see costumes and of course will drool over hot fetish attire. But costumes are not required. Our only restrictions (well rather the city of Savannah’s restrictions as we’d like everyone naked): cover your nipples and sex parts. Many times Community Event invitations will include a ‘dress code’ request. Its not required, but it is recommended.
Q: What is the dress code for the evening?
A: We ask that you dress per our themed event. However, we of course encourage Gothic, Steampunk, Industrial, Rivethead, Fetish, Victorian (Edwardian or Gothic), or Vampire aesthetic regardless of time period. All Black Minimum implies that you should wear more stylish or scene oriented attire than just casual; this means absolutely no sneakers, no shorts, no blue jeans, and no baseball caps.
Q: Why is there a dress code?
A: Many times Community Event invitations will include a ‘dress code’ request. Adhering to the dress code demonstrate that you are supportive of the hosts intention and that you have invested some fore-thought in the event. Dress codes should be adhered to, or you may pay extra at the door, discomfort yourself and the host, or not be allowed in at all. Appropriate attire is always expected; everyone will feel more at ease with guests who show the same degree of attention to appearance.
Q: Will you be enforcing the age policy?
A: Yes, the Door Policy is 21+ with valid ID.
Q. Will there be a cover charge?
A. Yes there will be a cover charge. Currently our cover charge is $10, but it depends on the event. Cover Charge is subject to change. Please remember to tip your bartenders.
Q. I can’t afford to go but I really really want to.
A. There are plenty of ways to reduce the cost of attending. 1. Get involved in helping out, ask for ways to do so by emailing us at bospromotions at blackoakssavannah dot com. Libitina can’t do it all, and loves the help! 2. Bring a flyer, student or military id for $2 off. 3. Prepay. Its less hassle, we put your name on a list, you show id and bam you’re in.
Q: I’ll be arriving early, where should I have dinner?
A: There are many lovely restaurants in town, some which are very atmospheric too. You may enjoy the Pirates House (912-233-5757) or The Crypt Pub Ghost Bar and Restaurant ((912) 234-0430), all located right down town in the historic district. There is also a nice cafe/tea room, The Gallery Espresso, on the corner of Bull and Perry, which is regular meeting spot for us locals and perfect for desert or a light fare. Go to www.savannahmenu.com
Q: I’m coming from out of town. What hotel should I book?
A: We recommend you stay in the historic district if possible. You can also book online at: http://savannah.guide-to-hotels.com
Q: I’ll be staying in town for the weekend. Any must see stops?
A: Depending on your interests Savannah has much to offer; you can start at http://www.savcvb.com. We recommend a walk on historic River Street. Any of the carriage rides, ghost tours, historic or garden tours can be both fun and educational.
Q: I am affiliated with an organization that is based in the Savannah region and we would love to be involved in your next event. What do we have to do?
A: Whether you are part of an established organization or not, if you would like to participate in our future events, simply drop us a line at: bospromotions (at) blackoakssavannah.com Send us your website details, or an introduction and we will definitely keep in touch.
Q. I won’t know anyone there.
A. Come find the event coordinator: Libitina. She will introduce myself, welcome you to the event and introduce you to friends and family. Black Oaks has helped others form friendships, loves, and mortal enemies.
Q. I am in this community group and I don’t like so and so….
A. We personally enjoy meeting people and don’t give a hoot what you belong to. As organizer, Libitina will treat you with respect and welcome you to the Black Oaks event. But, if you cause an unacceptable disturbance, our hot doorman will throw your ass out, and we won’t control the rumors that ensue from your dumbass.
Q. I want to go, but I live out of town and can’t afford a hotel room.
A. Email us about needing crash space. If Libitina knows you she will offer or she can help find someone who can provide crash space.
Q. Do I need to be a goth, vampire, wiccan, pagan, etc to attend?
A. No. Everyone, and I mean everyone is welcome. This event is for the community.
Q. I don’t like that type of music the bands play.
A. We always strive to bring different genres of bands to our events so that each event is a different experience. While the bands are a part of the event experience there is still plenty of things going on. Opportunities to meet new friends, community leaders, receive henna or a tarot reading, see other performances such as belly dancing, learn about your alternative local community. If you have a favorite band you’d like to see perform at Black Oaks Savannah, make a request to us.
Q. I am too old to attend.
A. The majority of our guests are within the 20 to 40+ year age range. The crowd at Black Oaks is very diverse.
Q. When is Voltaire returning? (or such and such)
A. We often welcome back bands or performers to our event. But we try to space out their return. Don’t worry Voltaire will play again at Black Oaks. In the meantime please come out and support our other band artists! You might discover a new band to fall in love with or one to hate.
Q. I can’t wait for the next Black Oaks, why can’t there be more events?
A. Black Oaks often supports and promotes other events that happen throughout the year. Feel privileged, even our small town gets great performers to attend. But we can’t keep bringing them here if you don’t come out to support!
Q. What happens to the profits at Black Oaks?
A. Often we break even on the door as all profits go towards putting this event on and any leftovers are donated to local charities, such as the local food bank, the Red Cross, disaster reliefs, etc. If you don’t drag your ass out to an event or two throughout the year, we won’t be able to afford the next one. We have often spent our own funds to pay for events that did not generate enough funds at the door to cover the evening and sometimes those figures are in the hundreds. Events, like Black Oaks, are expensive to have, please come out and support us.
Q. I am a business that would like to get involved.
A. Great. We love to help out small businesses. Ask us about vending, helping promote your business or sponsorships.
Q. Will there be security?
A. Yes. We always have security and proud to say we’ve never had a major problem at our events.
Q. These themes suck, why can’t you do such and such theme?
A. We plan for our next years event in the fall, email us your theme suggestions! We rattle our brains thinking of these things, we’d love the help.
